What would a car look like if it was designed by a robot?
Project Chameleon is showing us, and it’s pretty exciting. The photos below show the design space that we started with (top left), where we fed in different load case data for cornering, pot-hole impacts, braking etc., and the incredible (definitely not black magic) software from stochastic topology optimisation experts Rafinex output these organic-looking structures.
What once would have taken a team of designers potentially months to create, we have done in a mere week.
Project Chameleon was just a concept being discussed by a like-minded consortium of engineers only two weeks ago, and yet we are now close to producing our first structural prototypes.
This is the power of digital manufacturing. Additive manufacturing combined with generative design. Low cost, rapid development.
